About Us

“CAW Local 200 Computers For Kids” is an organization comprised of working people reaching out to our community, in order to fill an important need in the education of the children in our communities.  We believe  that all of our children should have the opportunity to gain computer literacy and to compete on a level playing field, regardless of social or economic status. The group of volunteers serving our community, in an effort to achieve that end, is growing daily.

The goal of the CAW Local 200 Computers For Kids program is to provide an opportunity for computer literacy to all of the young people in our community.  As CAW Local 200 President Mike Vince has often stated, we wish to provide a "hand up, not a hand-out."  We realize that valuable computer equipment is being discarded every day, throughout the Windsor & Essex County communities and beyond. A substantial amount of technology is sitting in storage, becoming more obsolete by the day and destined for area landfills.  Many of these computer parts and accessories can be refurbished. This refurbished equipment can be used by the youth in our community to gain access to technology for educational purposes.

Breaking Down The Barriers

Our education system is doing what it can, but after studying various schools around the county, our findings indicate that students are getting an average 35 minutes of computer and internet access per week.  It has been noted that children who have access to computers in their homes generally attain higher grades, are more creative and confident with their work.  This is due in part to their ability to complete projects while obtaining the relevant information via the internet. This gap in our educational system is not the fault of children who don't have reasonable access to the tools that computers provide. They will face much difficulty when advancing through to Secondary School, University or College, or for that matter, life in general, if they are not provided these tools.
